Maandag 25 juni en dinsdag 26 juni 2012 wordt in Pakhuis de Zwijger in Amsterdam een internationale, Engelstalige conferentie gehouden: de World Smart City Summit + Convention.
Deze internationale conferentie brengt honderden vertegenwoordigers van steden, universiteiten, onderwijsinstellingen, onderzoeksinstellingen, bedrijven, plaatselijke en regionale overheden samen. Organisator is de World Smart Capital Initiative, een in Schotland geregistreerde non-profit organisatie.

Doel van World Smart Capital  is:.... to identify and share successful urban innovations across cities worldwide while demonstrating how governments, industries, educational institutions and citizens are working individually and in concert to revitalize and invent their urban environment with help from urban technologies, ICT and smart systems.

Steden worden steeds groter. In het jaar 2050 zal bijna 70 procent van de wereldbevolking in een stad wonen, aldus het rapport World Urbanization Prospects uit 2009  van de Verenigde Naties. De mijlpaal van 50 procent werd bereikt in 2008. Nadenken en discussiëren over de toename van bewoners in grote steden is dus geen overbodige zaak.

Wat wordt verstaan onder een 'smart' city'?: .... A city can be defined as ‘smart’ when investments in human and social capital and traditional (transport) and modern (ICT) communication infrastructure fuel sustainable economic development and a high quality of life, with a wise management of natural resources, through participatory governance. The concept of ‘smart’ seems to rotate around 6 main areas: mobility, economy, environment, living, people and governance.
Forty years of extensive city research show that patterns of city development are similar across nations with different levels of deployment, technology and wealth – because the same basic social and economic processes are at work.

'Smart cities' zijn veel meer dan technologie:.... The citizens are the people cities work for and the improvements always have to be designed around their needs. Smart is but a step on the journey - better information does not mean better decisions. 
There are three vital ingredients for leading a city: sustained collaborative leadership, transformation through technology and customer insight and enrolment. With holistic, long term planning of sustainable energy action plans to achieve target goals and a strong commitment at local level. Stimulating the engagement of public, private and academic partners to embrace innovation at all levels.
